The Child Within
Many congratulations to Billie and Trevor who were married last week at The Mill House, Swallowfield. I was delighted to perform my family comedy-magic caberet show to all of the guests; Bride and Groom, Grandparents and Children alike and it got me thinking…
Whilst the strolling and close-up magic I show to adults is complex and intricate and can prove difficult for children to follow let alone comprehend, it is important to me that the magic I show to children still creates that same sense of awe and wonder in the adults watching.
It is always a pleasure for me to see different generations enthralled by the same ‘magic’. Watching the wide-spread grin of a 6 year old with a tooth missing and the crinkled laughter lines of her grandfather enjoying the same magic trick and comedy is simply thrilling. I know that not only have I entertained the child but I have also entertained the child within.
Some very clever people have written with such wisdom about just this and I just wanted to share a few of those quotes with you:
Happy is he who still loves something he loved in the nursery: He has not been broken in two by time; he is not two men, but one, and he has saved not only his soul but his life. G.K. Chesterton
So, like a forgotten fire, a childhood can always flare up again within us. Gaston Bachelard
He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe is as good as dead; his eyes are closed. Albert Einstein
My childhood maybe over, but that doesn’t mean playtime is. Ron Olson
